What to Look for in Display
Graphics and Trade Show Graphics
An image that is used for
display or illustration purposes is referred to a display graphic.
Display graphics are typically created using “large format” printing,
and can be printed on a large number of materials including fabric,
paper, and vinyl. Most commonly display graphics are large graphics
which have been printed onto paper or other material and then placed in
a location where a customer is most likely to notice.
When only one copy of the display graphic is printed it is referred to
as a one-off display graphic. These are typically used for conventions,
trade shows, press conferences, or special events like an athletic
tournament.
When a company has several different retail locations or sales branches
they will often order multiple units of display graphics. To create a
consistent and recognizable marketing campaign companies will use copies
of the same poster, banner stands, or vinyl banners at each of its
locations.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Applications
Indoor display graphics applications include malls, retail stores,
conferences, and trade shows. Outdoor display graphics applications
include vehicle or window graphics, streetscape banners, and large
outdoor posters printed on either fabric or vinyl.
A special ink is required for those graphics displays that will be
placed outdoors so that they are UV resistant and waterproof. The inks
used for outdoor display graphics have been specifically designed not to
fade quickly when exposed to sunlight and to resist water. While some
retailers may want to skimp by using water based inks and then
laminating the items, this is usually not an acceptable solution.
Some indoor graphics display items can also benefit from the use of
solvent based inks. One example of this is banners that will be
repeatedly rolled and unrolled. Water based inks are more likely to
scratch and break down during these circumstances. Another example is a
banner that would be placed in front of your display at a trade show and
would be vulnerable to spilled water or coffee during the show. It is
helpful to think about having the most durable display possible.
Artwork Considerations
You can get assistance from your display graphic supplier as to the
appropriate illustrations and images to use with your display. Today’s
digital printing technology makes it possible to use a wide variety of
images including maps, logos, photographs, text, or any image that you
can printi using a graphics program such as Coreldraw, Illustrator, or
Quarkexpress.
The resolution of your original images will be a major consideration
when determining if a graphic will work well in your display. While you
will need a resolution of about 300 ppi for offset printing, digital
printing can produce great results with an image resolution as low as 50
ppi. This is an important thing to consider when shooting your original
photos. To use them for banners, roadside signs, or popup displays it
helps to make them as large as possible.
You will want to locate a graphics display retailer who is willing to
guide you through the process in plain, uncomplicated terms. It is
relatively simple to create an effective display once you have some
experience working with layouts and images. Always remember that a
simple design which focuses on one or two main elements will be most
effective. Most quality retailers will even assist you will making minor
changes to your graphics files at no additional charge.
