History of Banners

A brief history of banners.

One of the earliest pieces of textual evidence of banners occurs in the Old Testament, where they are used as a rallying point in battle in Exodus 17:15.

Banners were used for identification purposes by Japanese soldiers in battles. These banners, or sashimono as they were called, were most popular in feudal Japan during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Banners have a long history of use in war, from the Crusades to the American Civil War.

In towns throughout Italy there is an annual Palio, where banners help in identifying the various contrade. In Sienna, the prize itself is a silk banner.
