Banner Making
Banner sewing is an ancient craft.
There are a wide variety of techniques used in this art, including
patchwork, appliqué, fabric painting, and embroidery.
History of Banners
One of the earliest pieces of textual
evidence of banners occurs in the Old Testament, where they are used as
a rallying point in battle in Exodus 17:15.
Heraldic Banners
A
heraldic banner, or banner of arms, is usually square and displays only
the basic coat of arms. This means that it does not include the helmet
or coronet, crest, supporters, mantling, motto, or a variety of other
things that could be found on a full coat of arms.
Heraldry and The Coat of Arms
A “blazon” is the official written
description of a coat-of-arms. When you draw a particular coat-of-arms
you emblazon it. Blazons have a distinct set of regulations so that the
coat-of-arms will always turn out consistent, no matter who draws it.
