Banner sewing is an ancient craft. There are a wide variety of techniques used in this art, including patchwork, appliqué, fabric painting, and embroidery. Banner making produces a piece of cloth, often shaped like a flag, which bears an important message, usually a logo or slogan. This craft has been around for a very long time.

The term banner comes from the Latin word bandum, which translate into “cloth to produce a flag” (similar words can be found, including the Latin banderia and the Italian bandiera). The word was developed in German to mean a proclamation or decree. Since these proclamations usually served to prohibit a particular activity, bandum began to mean ban or control. Banns has the same origin, and means official proclamation. To abandon means to “leave the cloth or flag”, or more simply put to change allegiance or go against an order.
